Understanding Your Options

Helpful answers to the most common questions about the InterMed change.

This page is designed to help you understand the recent change involving InterMed and what it means for your care. Here, you’ll find straightforward answers to common questions, along with guidance on choosing a new provider and continuing your care without interruption. Our goal is to make this transition as smooth and stress‑free as possible.

InterMed made the decision to end their participation. This was not a decision made by Generations Advantage. We know this may feel surprising, especially if you’ve been with an InterMed provider for many years.
No. Your Generations Advantage coverage remains active and unchanged.

After January 1, 2027, InterMed will no longer be in‑network. This means you’ll need to select a new PCP to continue receiving in‑network care.

NOTE: Generations Advantage Select (LPPO) plan does not require an in-network PCP. 2027 members of this plan can continue to see their InterMed PCP paying out-of-network copays/cost shares.

You are not required to notify InterMed, however, a courtesy message to your PCP is recommended.
Yes. You may update PCP information via your Generations Advantage member portal or by calling Member Services.

To select a new primary care provider, you can browse our Martin's Point Health Care providers, or our Generations Advantage provider network. Both options represent trusted providers across Maine to meet your needs.

Your new PCP’s office can request your medical records directly from InterMed. You may be asked to sign a release form. This process is common and typically handled between offices.
Your new PCP can review your current medications and send updated prescriptions to your preferred pharmacy. If you use mail‑order or a specialty pharmacy, your new provider can coordinate those refills as well.

Yes. Having a PCP helps ensure you get preventive and routine services and that your overall care is coordinated with any specialty services you may need.

Note: Generations Advantage HMO and HMO-POS plan members are required to have an in-network PCP on file. PPO-style plans do not require an in-network PCP.

No. Members can choose any provider within our network, which includes providers at our Martin’s Point Health Care Centers and other participating health care providers in the areas where our health plans are offered.

Using in-network providers ensures the best coverage and lowest out-of-pocket costs.

You can use your health plan's Provider Directory on the Martin’s Point website to search for a provider by name, specialty, or location.

Access your Provider Directory by using this link, or by clicking the "Find a Provider" option under the Medicare Plans dropdown menu.

When using the Provider Directory, you will see a profile of each in-network provider in your search results. An icon that says “Accepting new patients” will appear if a provider is accepting new patients to their practice (see image below).

We recommend calling the provider’s office to confirm that they are accepting new patients.
