Despite multiple interventions, including provider and member outreach, many of our eligible Generations Advantage members do not receive the HEDIS®-recommended bone density scan within six months of a fracture. Access to screening has been identified as a key barrier.
To support our network providers and improve timely screening, Martin’s Point community health workers will use our new handheld bone density scanner to offer home-based scans to members identified with gaps in care. Results will be shared directly with the member’s primary care provider to ensure appropriate follow-up and treatment.
The MiniOmni bone density scanner from Beam Med is FDA-approved, has been used in large-scale research studies, and demonstrates a high level of precision when used at the radius . Offering this scan through the health plan does not impact a member’s benefits. Providers can still order a full DXA scan, if clinically indicated, with no denial or added member cost if the MiniOmni scan has already been performed.
With osteoporosis affects nearly 10 million Americans, one in two women over age 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. Fractures increase the risk of falls, disability, and mortality, making timely screening and treatment critical. We are committed to expanding access to this important screening to support early identification and management of osteoporosis, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reducing fracture risk.
