Get tested regularly for your best health.

Over time, high blood sugar can damage kidneys and other organs. Specific tests are recommended throughout the year to monitor and manage diabetes. Kidney-related testing is recommended annually. Blood sugar level testing (hemoglobin A1c) is generally recommended at least twice per year.

Recommended Testing

  • Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c): This blood test measures average blood sugar over three months, showing if blood sugars are controlled. The goal for most adults with diabetes is an A1c under 7%.
  • Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR): This blood test checks how well kidneys are filtering waste from your blood.
  • Urine albumin creatinine ratio (uACR): This urine test measures how much albumin (a protein) is in urine—an indicator of early kidney damage.
