Understand how your benefits work outside the US.

Before heading abroad, it’s important to understand both the availability of health care in each country and how your Plan’s international health coverage works. The following information and resources will help you prepare for a safe and healthy trip.

Note: Your Plan’s coverage does not guarantee eligibility to receive care or medications outside the US. This is determined by each country and varies widely.

How to use your benefit

Follow these steps when receiving out-of-country care:

  • 1. Do not present your Medicare or Generations Advantage card—these are not valid outside the US.
  • 2. You will need to pay full costs directly to the providers/facilities that delivered the care. Obtain copies of medical records showing services provided and itemized receipts showing the amount you paid.
  • 3. Submit a copy of receipts and records to the Plan for reimbursement of eligible costs minus applicable copays up to the annual limit. Keep a copy for your records.

Smart traveler tips

Before you go—do your research.

  • Read up on eligibility for and availability of health care/prescription drug services and required vaccinations for each country you’ll visit.
  • Learn more from the US State Department at travel.state.gov and from the CDC at cdc.gov/travel.

Once you arrive—find local care resources

  • Find local care resources. Look up the locations of local urgent/emergency care facilities and keep their phone numbers handy.

If you have questions about your coverage, don’t hesitate to call Member Services.
