A biosimilar medication is a type of biologic medication that is highly similar to and has no clinically meaningful differences from a reference biologic medication. The FDA reviews and approves biosimilars and their reference biologics, meaning that, although not identical, the biosimilar will have the same treatments and risks, and are safe and effective for treating the same illness as the biologic reference product.
Biosimilars may be available at a lower cost than the original biologic reference product. More information can be found on the FDA website: https://www.fda.gov/drugs/biosimilars/overview-health-care-professionals.
The Martin’s Point Generations Advantage prescription formulary includes various biosimilar medications, which may have cost share savings when used in place of the biologic reference medication. Prescribing biosimilars may require working with your patient’s pharmacy to see what they can supply, as well as educating your patient on biosimilar medications.
