Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is one of the most common and dangerous cancers, but it is also highly preventable. Early-stage colon cancer often causes no symptoms, so many people don’t know they have it until the disease is advanced—when treatment is more complex and outcomes are often worse. Regular screening can find cancer early, when it’s easier to treat, or prevent it altogether by finding and removing precancerous polyps.
Clinical guidelines recommend that adults ages 45 to 75 receive routine colorectal cancer screening, even if they feel well. Your Generations Advantage plan covers in-network colorectal cancer screenings at no cost, making it easier to receive this important preventive care.
| Screening Test | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Colonoscopy | Every 10 years |
| CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) | Every 5 years |
| Flexible sigmoidoscopy | Every 5 years |
| Cologuard® (stool DNA test) | Every 3 years |
| Fecal occult blood test (stool FOBT/FIT) | Every year |
Not all screening tests are right for everyone. Stool-based tests may not be appropriate based on your medical and/or family history, or prior findings. If you are between 45 and 75 years old and are not up to date on this screening, call your doctor to discuss which option is best for you and get it scheduled soon.
If you’ve already completed your colorectal cancer screening, thank you for staying proactive with your preventive care.
